Jingjing: Mark, didn't the National Holiday whiz by?
京晶：马克，国庆节难道不是很快就过去了吗？
Mark: Yeah, I really only had three days. What about you?
马克：是啊，我实际上只有三天时间。你呢?
Jingjing: Pretty much the same—but it was a good way to refresh. What do you think of all the flags that get put up everywhere?
京晶：差不多，但它是一种很好的恢复活力的方式。你怎么看待到处悬挂着的国旗?
Mark: It's pretty cool to see. There's one over my entrance at my apartment building. On my way to work, I counted, and saw eight flags directly along my way.

Jingjing: You have a short commute, don't you?

Mark: Yeah, less than half an hour, on foot. Hey, that reminds me to ask you: why are young people in China so patriotic?

Jingjing: I think it's a combination of two things.

Jingjing: Second, we've experienced such rapid economic development and modernization in the past few decades. It's hard not to be patriotic.

Mark: That makes perfect sense. Thanks for explaining it concisely, Jingjing!

Jingjing: I'm glad I could shed some light on it for you, Mark.

Mark: Yeah, but I'm still in the dark about something: young people.

Jingjing: Well, because traditions are still so strong, and because even someone in their teens or twenties can attest to how much has grown and improved around them—young people feel patriotic too.

Mark: Sure. When places like the Temple of Heaven are in tip-top shape, and you can see some of the world's tallest buildings glistening on the horizon, anyone would be proud to be Chinese.
马克：确实。当像天坛这样的地方依然保持着最佳状态，你可以看到有一些世界上最高的建筑在地平线上闪闪发光，任何人都会为自己是中国人而自豪。
Jingjing: I think there's a third thing, too. It's like what people call the greatest generation in your country.
京晶：我想还有第三件事。就像大家说的你们国家最伟大的一代。
Mark: Oh, I think I know where you're going with that. Everyone feels like they have the chance to have a big influence and play a big part in the next big step their country makes.
马克：我想我知道你下来想说什么了。每个人都觉得自己有机会在国家的下一步大战略中产生重要影响和发挥作用。
Jingjing: That's a major part of patriotism, and probably why young people feel especially proud to be Chinese.

Mark: That's a lot of insight for one conversation, Jingjing. Thanks for the enlightenment!

Jingjing: Mark, as a teacher, you work with a lot of young people. How have you seen them express their patriotism?

Mark: I see elements of the flag or other Chinese symbols on students' clothing.
马克：我在学生的衣服上看到了国旗或其他中国符号的元素。
Jingjing: That's charming, isn't it? A few new clothing trends are looking back at earlier times for inspiration.
京晶：很好看，不是吗？一些新的服装潮流正在从更早的年代中寻找灵感。
Mark: I don't think I'll walk into my next classroom and see everyone dressed up like disciples of Confucius.

Jingjing: It's not like costumes, but rather elements, such as square necklines and chest-bands getting incorporated into modern designs.

Mark: That can add up to a really new look.

Jingjing: There's even a name for it: guochao. In Chinese, the guo character means country.

Mark: I would have guessed. What about chao? Is it the same as in Chaoyang District?

Jingjing: I was getting to that. And no. It looks almost the same, but has three short strokes over to the left. So, the character means tide, or surge.
京晶：我正要说这个。不是。它看起来几乎一样，但在左边还有很短的三笔。所以，这个潮字的意思是潮水或浪潮。
Mark: That fits perfectly. I'll be watching for new trends with very Chinese characteristics.

Jingjing: They're already all around us, Mark. Also, with food, something that seemed just about convenience is now taking on very rich tradition.

Mark: You're not talking about fast food and junk food becoming more uniquely Chinese, are you?

Jingjing: More like food delivery, and packaged products that take less preparation—for people with busy lifestyles.

Mark: So, how are those becoming more characteristically Chinese?

Jingjing: Using more real ingredients, and higher technology to get a good value to consumers, companies are offering what was only available from fine restaurants or home chefs in the past.
京晶：这些公司使用更好的食材和更高的技术，让消费者物有所值，让大家享用过去只有在高级餐厅或配备家庭厨师才能吃到的食物。
Mark: Oh, you mean like that hot pot where you pull a cord and it starts boiling with real peppers and beef?
马克：你是指那种只要拉一根线就能让真正的辣椒和牛肉沸腾的火锅吗?
Jingjing: It may have started with things like that. But now, just to stay in the market, companies are finding ways to get authentic dishes like hot dry noodles onto people's plates.
京晶：可能就是这样开始的。但现在，为了在市场上站稳脚跟，各大公司都在想方设法将热干面等正宗菜肴送上人们的餐桌。
Mark: Funny you should mention hot dry noodles. A Chinese friend of mine just packed up for a year in Northern Europe. He stuck a box of packaged hot dry noodles in his suitcase and took out two sweaters just to make space for that.
马克：有趣的是你提到了热干面。我的一个国人朋友刚刚收拾好行李，准备去北欧呆一年。他在行李箱里塞了一大盒热干面，为了给热干面腾出空间还取出来了两件毛衣。
Jingjing: Hopefully he's successful in Northern Europe for that year and can buy new sweaters. I think he made a smart choice.
京晶：希望这一年他在北欧顺顺利利，也可以买新毛衣。我认为他做了一个明智的选择。
Mark: Right. Who knows if he can find some of those authentic Chinese products where he's staying—at least in the first week or so.

Jingjing: It's enough to keep him happy until a shipment comes to him. So, that's another form of patriotism, and how companies are responding to what people want.
